Uno de los principales riesgos de diseñar estrategias de educación basadas en supuestos y presunciones es que si nos equivocamos, el costo es altísimo: puede pagarlo toda una generación .

Tras años replicando supuestos como el de los “nativos digitales” (generación de adolescentes/jóvenes diestros en las tecnologías, con habilidades multitasking que utilizan con toda destreza el uso de los dispositivos digitales) hoy vemos que eso no es más que una verdad a medias (desde nuestra perspectiva, un cliché que se desvanece a medida que surgen nuevas investigaciones. [Algo de esto ya habíamos expuesto, al presentar los resultados de la investigación ‘Google Generation desarrollada por la University College London].

Aparte de Prensky, Tapscott es el capitán general de este supuesto (ver crítica a su trabajo), que aunque presume haber invertido 4 millones de dólares explorando el tema, temo que no ha hecho más que repartir con mucho marketing mitos urbanos.

SUPUESTOS:

1) “For the first time in history young people are assumed to be more competent than adults in managing and living with new technologies that have become integral to everyday life” (Tapscott, 1998).

2) “Digital Natives are used to receiving information really fast. They like to parallel process and multi-task. They prefer their graphics before their text rather than the opposite. They prefer random access (like hypertext). They function best when networked. They thrive on instant gratification and frequent rewards. They prefer games to “serious” work” (Prensky, 2001).

Ellen Helsper(*) del OII, publicó el 2008 un trabajo realizado entre el Department for Children, Schools and Families y los amigos de FutureLab, en el que explica que estos “”nativos digitales”" carecen de habilidades para evitar exponerse a situaciones de riesgo/vulnerabilidad en entornos digitales (ej: comercial, agresiva, sexual o valórica). Helsper concluye que la estrategia que adoptan estos jóvenes para enfrentar este tipo de problema es esconder la cabeza, tal como el avestruz.

” [...] the erroneous identification of a whole generation as digital natives might lead to an overestimation of young people‟s skills in dealing with the risks and negative experiences associated with the internet. Younger generations are less likely to seek help than older generations and more likely to ignore the risks they do encounter without taking action to prevent these from happening again – here labelled the „ostrich tactic‟ .

“Young people use an „ostrich tactic‟, that is they look the other way when negative experiences occur (eg quickly deleting an email) and continue as normal after the „threat‟ has passed”.

“There is enough evidence that young people are not completely comfortable with ICTs such as the internet because they are often unable to avoid or evaluate online risks” (Hope Cheong, 2008; Livingstone, 2008).

“What is important to note is that there is enough evidence to point out that not all young people are experts, and that internet skills differ by gender, ethnicity, socio-economic status, income, and education as well as by generation (Helsper and Eynon, forthcoming; Livingstone and Bober, 2005b).



En definitiva, el estudio (que me encantaría que los amigos prenskystas pudieran leer) explica que la experiencia y expertise en el uso de TIC es mucho más relevante que la edad. (“Experience and expertise are more significant predictors of the latter than generation“). La de Helsper es una notable invitación a des-aprender y a cuidarse de los “opinólogos”.
